Steam-driven Revolving Cylinder
1. Intoduction
A novel design for a revolving steam engine patented in 1858 by Thomas Rogers. This 1/8th scale model is not an exact replica but the builder's interpretation of it. The wheel is a larger diameter whilst the spokes and bosses are fabricated rather than castings. The model is designed to run on steam or compressed air. It is uni-directional, the rotation being dependant on which side the steam is applied to, the other side being the exhaust. In real life, it was singularly unsuccessful due to the difficulty of effecting a steam-tight seal between the cylinder bosses and the support arms. The model uses "O" rings to reduce leakage to a minimum. An interesting and unusual style of engine, if somewhat impractical.
