The LSWR Class 460 was a seriesof 21 express passenger 4-4-0 steam locomotives
designed by William Adams for the London and South Western Railway (LSWR),
with 20 units built in 1884 and one additional locomotive constructed
in 1887 for display at the Jubilee Exhibition. These locomotives represented
an evolution of Adams's earlier 445 Class, featuring larger 79-inch driving
wheels to enhance performance on high-speed express services across the
LSWR network, while retaining similar boiler and cylinder dimensions for
compatibility and efficiency. Built by both Robert Stephenson & Co. and
Neilson & Co., they were numbered 147, 460–478 and 526. Key specifications
included 18 x 24-inch cylinders, a boiler pressure of 160 psi, Stephenson
valve gear, and a tractive effort of 13,387 lbs, enabling them to haul
passenger trains effectively on the expanding LSWR routes during the late
Victorian era. The class's design emphasized speed and reliability for
intercity expresses, such as those between London and Southampton. All
were withdrawn from service by 1928.
